Who Pays for Domestic Helper Insurance and Air Tickets in Hong Kong?

Hiring a foreign domestic helper in Hong Kong involves more than simply finding the right candidate. Many employers, especially first-time employers—have questions about the costs involved, including domestic helper insurance and air ticket arrangements.

At HelperLink HK, we believe in providing accurate and transparent information so employers can make informed decisions before beginning the hiring process.

1. Domestic Helper Insurance

Under the Standard Employment Contract and applicable Hong Kong regulations, employers are responsible for providing employees’ compensation insurance coverage for their foreign domestic helper throughout the entire employment period.

Is insurance included in HelperLink HK’s placement service?
No

Domestic helper insurance is arranged separately by the employer because it falls under the employer’s unique legal responsibilities. While it is not included in our base placement fee, we are always happy to guide you toward trusted insurance options.

2. Who Pays for the Air Ticket?

Air ticket arrangements depend on the helper’s employment status and the specific hiring timeline.

Under the Standard Employment Contract and applicable Hong Kong regulations, employers are expected to cover travel costs between contracts:

  •  For Finished-Contract Helpers: When a helper completes a contract locally and switches to a new family, the previous employer is typically responsible for their travel arrangements back to their home country.
  •  The New Employer’s Role: As the incoming employer, you are responsible for providing the air ticket for the helper’s journey from their home country to Hong Kong to begin their contract, alongside a standard daily food and travel allowance (typically HK$100 per day) during transit.
  •  Deferred Home Leave: Many local arrangements utilize “deferred home leave,” allowing the helper to start working for your family right away, with the mandatory trip back to their home country postponed for up to one year. You will provide their return flight to Hong Kong following this leave period.

HelperLink HK Transparency Promise

Before you proceed with any placement, we will clearly explain:

  • The helper’s current employment status
  • Whether home leave arrangements apply
  • All applicable hiring costs
  • What is included in our placement package
  • Any additional expenses you may need to prepare

No hidden fees. No surprises.
